It’s easy to collaborate with a big brand on a very popular silhouette that would sell for sure. The challenge is to actually partner up on a less-popular shoe and sell out just as well. And this time, long-time partners Nike and Stussy are bringing back a 90s silhouette through and through. So, are you ready to check out the upcoming Stussy Air Penny 2? The kicks hold a lot of nostalgia, especially for basketball fans, and here’s everything you need to know about them!
Don’t worry, we’re not gonna get into the history of the partnership in detail. That’s a story for another time. However, we’re gonna stop at a couple of important milestones. The two brands go way back, all the way to Y2K. That’s not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but in terms of sneaker partnership, it’s actually a lot!
So 2001 is the official year that Nike Stussy became a thing when the first collaborative Stussy Nike Dunk dropped. However, in 2000, a collab between Michael Kopelman and Nike took place; the kicks in question were Nike Huaraches. Although it wasn’t under the Stussy title, the kicks were still Stussy exclusives since Kopelman is a Stussy OG. And finally, the most expensive Stussy Nike collab was the Cherry Dunk, which is worth about $3,000 in resale. We’re happy to inform you that this partnership is going as strong as ever.
So, Penny Hardaway was a big name in the NBA, even with Michael Jordan’s shadow looming over the league. And in 1993, he inked a deal with Nike too following the year’s draft! Although it wasn’t as big as Michael Jordan’s deal, we still got some really memorable performance kicks. One of these memorable kicks is the awesome Air Penny 2 in 1996. The kicks featured state-of-the-art technology at the time and a pretty cool silhouette.
We can’t really imagine an Air Penny release without the main character who stole the show from his namesake. So when the Stussy Air Penny 2 made an appearance online, it was through a surfer Lil Penny, wearing the collaborative kicks! And the other part of the campaign features big Penny along with Lil Penny, both wearing matching outfits. If that doesn’t scream nostalgia, we don’t know what does.
Stussy Air Penny 2 will drop on December 16, 2022, at the Stussy chapters in North America, EU, and UK. However, the kicks will drop on December 17, 2022, in Japan, Korea, and the rest of the regions. Two colorways will be available: an all-black pair, and black/green mix. The kicks will retail for $200, and they’re a must-have before the end of the year! You can actually flip these babies for more than 2x their original price on the resale market.
