How to buy a graphics card in 2026 comes down to four checks: the launch price, the power supply it needs, the room in your case, and a seller who charges close to list. This is our scouting of the options, with every figure taken from a maker’s own page or a dated news report.
- Launch prices: $549 for the RTX 5070 and RX 9070, up to $1,999 for the RTX 5090, according to NVIDIA’s and AMD’s launch announcements.

What is the difference between a graphics card and a GPU?
A GPU is the processor chip, and a graphics card is the whole add-in board built around that chip. According to Wikipedia’s graphics card article, the GPU is the main component of the board, though the acronym is sometimes used for the whole card, which the article calls incorrect. People swap the two words all the time, and we get why.
The board adds what the chip cannot bring alone. The same article says a card has separate memory, its own cooling system and dedicated power regulators, while integrated graphics inside a processor share system resources with the CPU. So every graphics card contains a GPU, but a GPU can also sit inside a processor with no card at all, and only the card is something you slot in.
How much power and space does a graphics card need?
A graphics card needs a power supply rated for the whole PC and a case with room for the board, and NVIDIA’s spec pages give a required system power and, for its own Founders Edition boards, a length. According to NVIDIA, required system power runs from 550 W for the RTX 5060 to 1,000 W for the RTX 5090. AMD lists a 650 W minimum supply for the RX 9070 and 750 W for the RX 9070 XT.
NVIDIA’s wattages come from a named test system. Its footnote says the minimum is based on a PC with a Ryzen 9 9950X processor and that requirements can differ with system configuration, so your own build can need a different figure.
Length is the other limit. For the Founders Edition design, NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 page gives 242 mm, and its pages for the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 give 304 mm. For partner-built models such as the RTX 5070 Ti and the RTX 5060 family it says “varies by manufacturer”, so measure the case before ordering.
Launch prices and power needs for six cards
A launch price is the list price a maker announces on release day, and it is the fairest baseline for judging any shop price. According to NVIDIA’s 6 January 2025 announcement, the RTX 5090 was priced at $1,999, the RTX 5080 at $999, the RTX 5070 Ti at $749 and the RTX 5070 at $549.
AMD’s 28 February 2025 announcement gave a suggested price of $599 for the RX 9070 XT and $549 for the RX 9070. The table sets those figures beside the power and memory figures from each maker’s spec page, which we read on 7 October 2026.

Rated power is NVIDIA’s total graphics power and AMD’s typical board power, and supply needed is each maker’s required or minimum system power. Market prices move and are shown for reference, not as a promise.
Why was it so hard to buy a graphics card in 2021?
It was hard because demand outran supply and shop prices climbed far above list. If you lived through the PS5 frenzy, you know the feeling. According to TechPowerUp on 30 August 2021, citing 3DCenter’s price tracking, NVIDIA cards sold in May 2021 at an average of 304% of list price and AMD’s at about 202%.
By late August 2021 the averages had fallen back to 59% above list for NVIDIA’s RTX 30 series and 64% for AMD’s RX 6000 series, and were rising again, the same report says. The real relief followed Ethereum’s switch from mining to staking, called the Merge, which ethereum.org dates to 15 September 2022.
The Register reported on 24 September 2022 that cards were easier to get as supply caught up with falling demand, and that the RTX 3090 Ti, launched at a $1,999 list price six months earlier, could be found for less than $1,100.
Why are graphics card prices rising again in 2026?
Prices in 2026 are being pushed up by memory costs, according to TechPowerUp. Its 11 September 2026 report, citing Jon Peddie Research, says desktop add-in board shipments reached 12.5 million units in the second quarter of 2026, the most since the first quarter of 2022, while the industry faces a severe memory crisis and makers have pushed through several rounds of price increases.
At the top end the gap is wide. On 14 May 2026 TechPowerUp reported that RTX 5090 listings at Western retailers such as Newegg regularly exceeded $4,000, about twice the $1,999 launch price (2 × $1,999 = $3,998). We could not confirm street prices for the other models in the table, so read the launch column as a baseline, not a quote.
Where can you buy a graphics card near list price?
NVIDIA’s launch announcement named three routes to a card: Founders Edition boards from nvidia.com and select retailers, partner models from add-in card providers, and desktops from system builders. Retailer drawings such as the Newegg Shuffle are a fourth route, covered below.
The Founders Editions it named were the RTX 5090, RTX 5080 and RTX 5070, and the add-in card providers included ASUS, GIGABYTE, MSI, PNY and ZOTAC. The system builders included MAINGEAR, ORIGIN PC, PC Specialist and Scan Computers. A pre-built PC is a fair route when the board alone is hard to find, though it bundles a processor, memory and storage, so the total is higher than the board by itself.
As of 7 October 2026 we could not confirm which route charges list price. TechPowerUp’s report of 14 May 2026, via VideoCardz, said the only way to buy an RTX 5090 at its $1,999 MSRP was to wait for NVIDIA to refresh its Founders Edition stock on the NVIDIA Marketplace. Newegg’s Shuffle help page says the original MSRP does not apply to every board-partner model.
How the Newegg Shuffle drawing works
The Newegg Shuffle is a drawing system that gives buyers a chance at limited, high-demand products during scheduled events on Newegg.com, according to Newegg’s FAQ. Products in an event show an Enter the Shuffle button in place of Add to Cart, and entering takes a Newegg.com account. Newegg says the aim is a fairer shot for every customer and to help shut down the tactics that let a few people grab everything first.
Newegg says reservations are distributed randomly based on how often each item was selected, with a maximum of one selection per customer per event. Winners get an email or app notice, the item goes into the cart through the link in that notice, and the purchase has to be finished before the buying window closes. We could not confirm which events include graphics cards, so check an event’s product list before planning around it.
Do checkout bots help with buying a graphics card?
A checkout bot is software that works through a retailer’s cart and payment steps for you, and it cannot change the result of a random drawing. Newegg describes its Shuffle picks as random, with one selection per customer per event, so clicking sooner inside the selection window does not improve the odds.
Retailers also set rules on automation: the same FAQ says Newegg blocks millions of bot attempts every day and that using auto-refreshers, loaders or crawlers can result in a permanent IP ban.

Do the power cables come in the box?
NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 family page lists “2x PCIe 8-pin cables (adapter in box)” or a 300 W or greater PCIe Gen 5 cable for the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti. Partner models can differ, so read the listing for the exact connector.
Is integrated graphics enough instead of a separate board?
According to Wikipedia, integrated graphics offer low cost, compactness, simplicity and low energy consumption, but they often perform below a separate card because they share system resources with the CPU.
