Shattered Backboard.. That’s more than enough for sneakerheads to picture the legendary orange and black Air Jordan 1 Shattered Backboard right? The question is, where did this interesting name come from?
That’s right, the name came from this legendary dunk by Michael Jordan on August 25th, 1986 in an exhibition game in Italy. That day, MJ actually shattered the backboard and showered the other players with glass shards. And he was wearing the Trieste black, white and orange uniform when he did!
In 2015, 29 years after the game (and celebrating 30 years of Michael Jordan), Jordan Brand released the Air Jordan 1 Retro Shattered Backboard in memory of that glorious dunk.
Now let’s take a minute to remember this interesting silhouette and take a peek at the latest addition to the Shattered Backboard family!
Air Jordan 1 Retro Shattered Backboard
The one that started it all. This shoe managed to become one of the most sought-out shoes ever with a mixture of silhouette (hello, AJ1?), exclusivity, colors and backstory. The shoe features the Air Jordan 1 silhouette, similar to the “Black toe” Air Jordan 1, having a starfish orange color replace the red. It is made of high quality leather and mixes the black, starfish orange and sail colors.

Air Jordan 1 Retro Reverse Shattered Backboard
Also known as Air Jordan 1 Retro Shattered Backboard Away and Air Jordan 1 Retro Shattered Backboard 2.0. The interesting thing is that this shoe has a related, but different backstory. Did you know that MJ played for both teams in the 1986 game? This is where the idea of the shoe comes from. The shoe features vibrant starfish orange, black and sail colors. The change of color distribution is a nod at this little anecdote.

The “Wings” logo is embroidered on the collar of the sneakers along with the swoosh which is also embroidered instead of leather. Finally, the orange outsole is actually translucent!
